A jurat is used when the document being notarized requires an oath and the notary must be
present to witness the signature.
An acknowledgment does not require an oath, and it does not need to be signed in front of the
notary; however, the signer must bring the document before the notary and acknowledge that
he signed the document.
Both require proof of identification, and if the document is for California real estate, then a
thumb print is required.

Can you use an ID from another country? No. In most cases, ID from another country is not
acceptable proof of ID. There is one exception that we are aware of and that is with a foreign
passport. Providing it is stamped by the US.
What about an expired license? Yes. If the license was issued within 5 years of the signing.
Where is the issue date on a driver's license? The date at the very bottom of the license.
My borrower has no identification, what now? In California, you can rely on 2 credible
witnesses to identify your borrower. These witnesses must provide proper identification and
swear under oath that they know the borrower to be the person they are claiming to be. They
would sign the notary book , but not the documents. The notary would then be able to notarize
the documents stating that the borrower provided proof of id.
